Qualia

Exploring the relation between virtual and physical realm through an investigation of space and the role of sight to our other senses

These subjective sense phenomena we have - qualia, lead to different sense perceptions. In the Western society, technology has allowed us to create more and new sensorial experiences, responding to the occularcentric culture built over time. Vision makes us believe that it can give us immediate access to the reality we live in, meaning it would give some sort of proximity. But I believe this phenomenon is mainly increasing the imbalance in our sensory system, keeping us away from truly sensing and understanding our built environment.

I started looking at the components of the perception of a space by defining those data and then select the most essential ones. From there, I make a game rule that will create new combinations for what could be space. From those new associations were created new spaces to be experimented by a user.

The unknown and unexperienced environments complemented by the different light tones is aiming to disorientate the individual’s experience. Each light tone, on a gradient from black to white, will have a change in one or several of the spaces created. The way I perceive space starts with the attention, which is the intensity of the stimulation I will have around me and how I make a selection. Then, I recognise the different stimulations to link them to knowledge and memory as a way to orientate myself. Those stimulations are what I am going to name data. I will name my selection: light, scale, gravity and object. Each of them have more data to describe them, which will be used as part of the development of each space.

I explore this space through the disorientation of the individual as he experiences a controlled and changing environment. This aims to create a new perception of space and new self, through the reliability of our senses. This confusion will act as an opportunity to re-train our perception of space and the use of our senses. The eye is used as the interface to sense the space without having the eye at the centre point of the perceptual reality. I originally aimed to create an algorithm for parametric design of space by first changing manually, and later automatically make new data combinations.
